Mina stampede kills over 700

A stampede occurred Thursday morning during the ritual known as “stoning the devil” in the neighborhood of Mina two miles from Mecca, Islam’s holiest city. During the ritual, pilgrims threw stones at three pillars to re-enact when the Prophet Abraham stoned the devil and rejected his temptations, according to Muslim tradition. Historically, hundreds have been killed during the occasion, with the deadliest being in 1990 when over 1400 pilgrims were killed.
