Blizzards over, Black ice next

With many public schools and federal government offices closed in the D.C area today, residents continue to be advised to stay off roads. Sunday’s clean-up process was the beginning. D.C Mayor Muriel Bowser made Monday’s itinerary clear, “today will be another clean up day.”Limiting the number of people on the road will assist in the progress of getting the roads cleaned up.With temperatures dropping below freezing this week, the possibility of black ice on roads concern government officials. The dangers of black ice include its transparent coating, making it hard for both drivers and pedestrians to see on roads and sidewalk.Residents are advised to shovel their own sidewalks and remain off roads to better assist the cleanup process. The city will slowly, but surely transition to its normal routine. What exactly are the snow totals for D.C? The official number for D.C when it comes to snow accumulation is 17.8 inches, making it fall short of other numbers reported throughout the region. The exact location used to calculate snow accumulations in D.C, is Reagan National Airport. The snow-measuring device used by a small team of weather observers was lost midway during the blizzard. The national weather service uses the snow totals to determine if additional aid is necessary at the location after a major storm.

Powerful Earthquake Shakes Alaska

At about 1:30am on Sunday morning a magnitude-7.1 earthquake perturbed south-central Alaska. The quake is believed to have been centered in the Kenai Peninsula about 160 miles south of Anchorage. There are no reports of injuries; however, a natural gas leak caused by the convulsion resulted in the destruction of four homes in the community of Kenai. Although high magnitude earthquakes are not unusual in Alaska, they are typically isolated to the more remote regions of the vast state. Alaska state seismologist Michael West claims this is the largest earthquake in the region in recent years, and that minor aftershocks are expected in the coming weeks.
