John Seigenthaler, Tennessee journalist, intimate confidante to two near-presidents and advocate for racial equality, pasted away Friday at the age of 86. Seigenthaler passed away at home peacefully while being surrounded by family. “We celebrate his life — his devotion to social justice, his advocacy of human rights, and his enduring loyalty to friends and family,” said his son, John Michael Seigenthaler. Seigenthaler career has had many memorable moments; he once saved a suicidal man’s life on a bridge over the Cumberland River, he led coverage of the civil rights movement when most Southern newspapers refused to, exposed corruption in the Teamsters union, grave deficiencies in the state’s mental health system and illicit activities of the Ku Klux Klan in Tennessee. “I think journalism was the most important thing I could have done with my life,” he said. “I just can’t think of anything I could have done with my life that would have been more meaningful.”
