Trevor Noah to succeed Jon Stewart on ‘Daily Show’

South African comedian Trevor Noah will become Jon Stewart’s replacement as host on“The Daily Show,” Comedy Central announced Monday. Noah, 31, was chosen a little more than a month after Stewart unexpectedly announced his departure following sixteen years as the show’s principal voice. Noah is the son of a black South African mother and white European father. Noah has an international presence, and hosted a successful late-night talk show in South Africa, called “Tonight with Trevor Noah.” He will join writer-comedian Larry Wilmore, who replaced Stephen Colbert in January in the half-hour slot following “The Daily Show.” When Noah takes the reins, Comedy Central will have completely recreated the one-hour comedy block that gave the network critical acclaim and, arguably, its identity. Stewart has not set an exact date for his exit from “The Daily Show” and, as a result, Comedy Central has said nothing on the matter. Michele Ganeless, Comedy Central president stated that Trevor Noah is an enormous talent, and he is a fresh voice who can speak to their audience with a keen take on the events of the day. Noah has previously appeared on Jay Leno and David Letterman. He was also the subject of a documentary film by David Paul Meyer, “You Laugh But It’s True,” which followed his career in post-apartheid South Africa.
