Fan struck by flying bat at Pirates-Cubs game

An unlucky fan was struck by a flying bat at Wrigley Field during the game between Pittsburgh and the Chicago Cubs Monday evening. The fan was carried from the stands on a stretcher. It is not immediately known what the fan’s current condition is. Chicago rookie Addison Russell (playing his first ever game at Wrigley Field), swung too hard and lost control of his bat as he led off the bottom of the seventh inning. The bat flew into the stands between the Cubs’ dugout on the third base side and the netting behind home plate. Cubs owner Tom Ricketts, who was sitting about five rows below the fan, asked a team trainer for ice and a towel. Ricketts went over to assist the injured fan while 911 was called.
