Five Maryland residents have died from cold weather-related causes in the past month, according to a report released Wednesday by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. These hypothermia-related deaths were named the first casualties of the season in the report. They include four men, two of whom who were between 18 and 44 years of age, and two aged 65 or older. Also listed was one woman, aged 65 or older. Winter and cold weather deaths can also be caused by frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning and burns and injuries from heat sources, say the department. Last winter, there were 15 weather-related deaths for the whole season. Any Maryland resident in need of housing or energy assistance is encouraged to call 211.
