In Federalsburg, Maryland 13 bald eagles were found dead on a farm on Saturday. Spokeswoman for the Maryland Natural Resources Police Candy Thomson said, “This is like a big puzzle.” Thomson added, “Their bodies will be sent to a forensic wildlife laboratory in Oregon, where forensic pathologists will go about the business of figuring out what happened to them.” Even though they’re no longer listed under the Endangered Species Act, bald eagles have still been federally protected since 1940. Fines up to $100,000 and up to a year of prison are punishments for anyone who endanger the birds.
