Fire fighting crews were responding to an emergency call at a home on Sharon Road in Temple Hills at around 7:30 p.m when two firefighters were shot and left in critical condition. One firefighter was transported to a local hospital, and the other was sent to a trauma center. According to Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski, “the call was a “welfare check” call, meaning that a concerned individual asked for crews to check in on the house resident. When crews arrived, the resident did not respond. The firefighters made the decision to enter the home, at which point the resident opened fire. The third shooting victim is believed to be the person who made the call. The shooter is now in custody.”

Update: One of the firefighters, John Ulmschneider, a 13 year veteran, has died from his wounds.
