Maryland – Verdict expected in Baltimore Freddie Gray-officer trial

Baltimore Circuit Judge Barry Williams is expected to hand down his verdict in the case of officer Edward Nero, who faces charges of assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment after the arrest and subsequent death of Freddie Gray. Prosecutors say Gray was unlawfully arrested and that Nero was negligent when he didn’t make sure the prisoner was buckled. Nero opted for a bench trial instead of a trial by jury, and Judge Williams is expected to announce his verdict Monday. Nero faces up to a maximum of ten years in prison for the assault charge, and up to five-year maximums for the other two charges.
