Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene officials have granted an extension on the deadline for the vaccinations required of kindergarten and seventh grade students. The decision to extend the deadline by 45 days is in an attempt to keep children in school as much as is possible. As long as more than 250 students at the school are already in compliance, non-compliant and excluded students are allowed to attend school until they are brought into compliance. This decision comes as the count of whooping cough cases grows in Montgomery County and around the country. The vaccines need boosters sooner than expected to be effective, which is a factor in why the spread is happening among vaccinated students.
