Clemency denied for Georgia woman nearing execution

The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles is standing by their decision to deny clemency to a woman scheduled to be executed Monday evening. Clemency was denied  last week for Georgia’s only female on death row, Kelly Renee Gissendaner. Gissendaner’s legal team had filed a last-minute motion asking the board to reconsider. Barring a last-minute court pardon, Gissendaner was set to receive a lethal injection at 7:00 p.m. at the state prison in Jackson. Gissendaner schemed with her boyfriend, Gregory Owen, who stabbed Douglas Gissendaner to death in February 1997. Owen pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. He will be eligible for parole in eight years.
