Josh Powell, a suspect in the disappearance of his wife in 2009, set his house on fire in Puyallup, Washington, killing his two sons, 5-year-old Braden and 7-year-old Charlie, and himself. Shortly before he committed this tragic crime, he sent his attorney an e-mail stating, “I’m sorry. Goodbye.” Ed Troyer, a Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman said, “This was something that was done deliberately and intentionally, and the plan was carried out very quickly.”

Troyer said, “He couldn’t live with what was going on.” His wife, 28-year-old Susan Cox-Powell, was never found after she went missing in West Valley City, Utah and her disappearance evolved into a sour custody battle between Powell and his wife’s parents. In his wife’s search, authorities searched a home where Powell, his father, Steven Powell, and his two sons, were living. During the search, investigators found child pornography and recordings of adult and juvenile females, belonging to Steven Powell. Custody was given to Cox-Powell’s parents. On Sunday, Powell was to see his sons with a supervised visit from a social worker. He snatched his sons, pushed the social worker back, and locked the door. Minutes later, the house exploded.
