Former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino died Thursday morning after a short battle with cancer at the age of 71. Menino, Boston’s longest-serving mayor, announced in March 2013 that he would not be running for what would have been his sixth term due to health problems. Menino was hospitalized many times throughout his mayorship, and was familiar with health struggles. Boston archbishop Cardinal Sean O’Malley told CNN that Menino “placed family, faith and public service above all else.”
