President Obama announced unilateral executive orders Thursday that will provide administrative relief and work permits to as many as 3.7 million parents of U.S. citizens and legal residents. The orders also shelter and additional 300,000 young immigrants who were brought to the country illegally as children. The decision to use executive orders instead of waiting for legislation is controversial, and Obama quoted Scripture and the words of predecessor George Bush in his announcement. There are more than 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., and Obama said deporting them would be “impossible and contrary to our character.”
