Boehner wants Obama to draft second version of new war powers

The White House fired back on Tuesday against House Speaker John Boehner who said that President Barack Obama should scrap his original draft of new war powers to fight Islamic State militants and send Congress a new-and-improved copy. Earlier this year, lawmakers asked Obama to submit a draft of war powers he would like to see in a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force. Congress surmised that a new AUMF is necessary because Obama is relying on war authorizations given to President George W. Bush after 9/11. Boehner openly accused the president of having no set strategy to fight Islamic State and opposed the group’s weekend takeover of the Iraqi city of Ramadi. He stated that the White House had initially sent up the first draft of new war powers back in February and has held more than a dozen of meetings about it with Democratic and Republican lawmakers as well as members of their staffs. Democratic Senator Tim Kaine (of Virginia) added that Boehner’s request is proof that the House is trying to avoid a debate on the issue. He said that means the Senate should address the issue as soon as possible.
