James Merrill Jeffords, Republican congressman and senator before breaking with his party in 2001, has died at the age of 80. Jeffords was the last Republican to hold federal office elected from Vermont and retired from the U.S. Senate in 2006 during the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. His decision to become an independent gave control of the Senate to the Democrats.”The passing of Senator Jim Jeffords will be felt throughout Vermont and our country,” Gov. Peter Shumlin said in a statement. “We need more like Senator Jeffords. My heart goes out to his children and extended family.”
