President Obama addressed the nation Wednesday evening to outline a plan of military intervention against the extremist Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS or ISIL). This plan includes launching airstrikes in Syria as well as in Iraq, as well as increasing the number of American military advisers in Iraq to around 1,700. Obama plans to work in coalition with the Iraqi government and to assist Syrian opposition fighters. Also planned are counterterrorism actions, including attempts to cut off ISIS’s funding, spread opposition information and block mercenaries from joining. Obama also proposes to continue humanitarian support for those in affected areas. The president claims bipartisan support for the plan.
