CBS has decided not to dictate to its announcers whether or not to use the nickname for the Washington NFL team during televised games this upcoming season. CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said that he hasn’t told on-air reporters such as Jim Nantz and Phil Simms what to say regarding the controversy surround the Redskins’ name. He stated at the summer TV critics’ meeting that CBS doesn’t tell its announcers what to say about any topic, that including team names. Team owner, Dan Snyder, has vowed not to change the name of the team and has since been facing opposition from those who believe it to be a racial slur. CBS is launching Thursday night coverage of NFL games this fall and is expected to cover five Redskins’ games this season.
