Alexandria city schools operated under higher-alert lock-in procedures after reports from elementary students about seeing a man with a “long gun” outside a playground yesterday afternoon. Young students at Matthew Maury Elementary School on Russell Road saw an unknown man through the chain-link fence who called at them and pointed what appeared to be a gun at them. School officials say no threats were made against the schools, and police report no injuries or shots fired. The schools continued classes as normal, with extra locked doors and clear hallways, while police searched the area around the school until just before 4:00 p.m. Schools released students a little later than usual, and explained the situation to parents in a letter. Police report the suspect as a black male with short, mohawk-style hair who was wearing a black shirt, blue pants and black boots. They urge anyone with information to call 911.
