Financial issues force Sweet Briar College to close

Sweet Briar College will be closing their doors permanently this summer due to financial issues. The private women’s college in Sweet Briar, Virginia announced the upcoming August 25 closure Tuesday in a news release. The college’s board of directors approved the closure on Saturday. President James F. Jones stated in the release that he, the board and several alumnae have searched for solutions, but to no avail. Jones added that few students are choosing to attend rural schools where options for internships and work experiences are limited, and even fewer want to attend a women’s college. Sweet Briar will be the third liberal arts college to close in Virginia within the past two years, the result of insurmountable financial pressures that also claimed Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville and Virginia Intermont College in Bristol.
