The Virginia Department of Health has found 18 known case of the Zika virus in the state as of May 26. Four people are carrying the virus in D.C. and 17 in Maryland, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Half of the people affected with the virus in Virginia live in the northern region of the state. Although most people may not know they are carriers of the virus, if bitten by a mosquito, that mosquito could become dangerous to pregnant mothers if the virus is transmitted. The CDC suggests pregnant women protect themselves by covering their skin and using insect repellant.
