The campaign against the controversial name of D.C.’s football team continues to push owner Dan Snyder to change the name of the franchise with a letter sent to owners of every NFL team Tuesday. The name of the team, the Washington Redskins, has come under fire in recent months for including the racial slur and caricatured head of a Native American man in the logo. The letter accuses Snyder of “conduct detrimental” to the league and the sport, which is grounds for removal of the guilty party under NFL laws and by-laws. It references the collective split of merchandise profits between all owners in the NFL as reason why all parties need to take a stand against the name. It is penned by the group Change the Mascot, which includes the National Congress of American Indians and the Oneida Indian Nation, as well as referencing support from Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.), D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), and officials from the NAACP. Snyder maintains that the name is not a slur, and therefore has no reason to change it.
