The D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute released a report claiming that D.C. public schools need to do more to help the more than 4,000 children in the district that qualified as homeless this past year. Under the McKinney-Vento Act, schools are required to provide transportation and equal opportunity access to programs. The new report states that the liaisons in charge of these services need more support and training, as well as funding for the program. Right now, D.C. gets about $35 per homeless student, which reports say is not nearly enough to meet their needs. In 2012, one in for children lived in poverty.
