The hearing on D.C. statehood will be held today at 3:00 p.m. in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The new state, which would be called New Columbia, was last voted down in 1993 by a 277 to 153 vote and has not been granted a hearing since. Statehood would allow D.C. residents to vote on congress members for the first time, but much of the resistance to the move comes from the prediction that the majority Democratic area would unfairly tip the balance in Congress towards that party. Supporters of the bill have taken to reusing the familiar “taxation without representation” slogan to push the need they see for statehood.
