Former federal lawyer Edward Smith believes that his roots in Washington makes him the right choice to become the District of Columbia’s first elected attorney general. After officially launching his campaign on Saturday, he has already raised $70,000 and two-thirds of the necessary signatures to get his name on the ballot.Currently, The District’s top lawyer is appointed by the mayor as the attorney general, but voters approved a referendum to make it an elected position. The other candidates are white-collar defense attorney Karl Racine, public policy attorney Lateefah Williams and defense lawyer Paul Zukerberg. The first election will take place in November.
