Jewish student in trouble for posting a swastika symbol

A law professor at George Washington University criticized the school for a decision to punish a student for posting an image of a Hindu swastika on the bulletin board of a Jewish fraternity. The student, a young Jewish man, was expelled from the fraternity by national leaders of Zeta Beta Tau. The incident happened on March 16. University President Steven Knapp issued a statement calling the display “utterly unacceptable.” Knapp added that the symbol has long been associated with hatred toward Jewish people.  The student claims the whole thing was one big misunderstanding. He said the symbol he posted was a Hindu symbol that embodies peace that he brought home from a spring break trip to India. The university is also currently investigating a separate (but similar) incident that had occurred in the same area on campus several weeks ago. Recent incidents have been referred to the D.C. police department’s hate crime unit.
