The Long Bridge replacement project has been awarded $2.8 million by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The National Environment Policy Act will use the funds as part of a study to assess what changes are needed to the century-old bridge. The bridge is the only direct rail connection between D.C. and Virginia, where it runs across the Potomac River parallel to the motorist 14th Street Bridge. The bridge handles 56 passenger and 23 freight trains daily, running at 98% capacity in peak hours, according to a DOT report. This grant is part of a $600 million grant project by the DOT that is split between 72 projects in transportation across the country.
