Massive tree collapses across Massachusetts Avenue in D.C.

A massive tree collapsed in northwest D.C. Sunday night, and two SUVs driving down Massachusetts Avenue slammed into it, unable to stop due to the perilous road conditions. The incident happened on 4200 block Massachusetts Avenue NW at around 6:30 p.m.  The block was closed in both directions because of the tree, which fell at the intersection of Macomb Street. Both drivers involved attempted to stop by slamming on their brakes, but the roads were too icy and slushy for them to stop. One of the drivers was a man on his way home from work. The other was a woman and her family on their way to the Washington Capitals game at the time. According to the woman’s husband, another car in front of them nearly got hit when the tree fell just behind it. He commented that the third driver probably never even knew the tree had come down, and the car just kept going. Both drivers stated that they saw the tree as it collapsed right in front of them, and they only had seconds to hit the brakes. There were no injuries reported.
