Reverend Clementa Pinckney, pastor of the Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Carolina and one of the nine slain last Sunday during Bible study, had ties to Washington, D.C. at Wesley Theological Seminary. He began his doctorate degree there in 2012. He had been preaching for nearly thirty years, since the age of 13. Pinckney, 41, was also a state senator for South Carolina for fifteen years and a strong voice for the African American community. Many are grieving the loss of their spiritual leader alongside their sadness for the eight other members of the church who were murdered.
