Photographer depicts kids playing on Vietnam memorial

Visiting from northern Ohio, photographer Matthew Munson was at the Vietnam Women’s Memorial (part of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial) over the weekend, when he saw two rambunctious children climbing on the statue that honors the thousands of women who served in Vietnam, mostly as nurses.  The incident happened on Saturday. According to Munson, the kids were coaxed to do so by their parents who wanted to get a picture.  While Munson was taking the photo, he noticed that a group of veterans were at the site when the kids were on the statue. Munson added that he could see how hurt the veterans were, and that it was a very powerful and awkward moment. The image went viral and prompted public outcry after being posted on Facebook and Reddit. Opinions about the kids’ behavior vary on social media, ranging from a ‘kids will be kids type of attitude’ to outright shock and outrage.
