Residents in D.C., Fairfax County may have been exposed to measles patient

An unnamed person has contracted the measles in Fairfax County, and the local health department has published a list of places in the area that the person visited while carrying the viral infection. Anyone who visited the Shelby Apartments in Alexandria, Embassy Suites hotel (on 10th Street NW in the District), Inova Fairfax Medical Campus or several other locations should contact the D.C. or Fairfax County health department immediately. For a complete list of locations that the contagious person visited from May 10 to May 16, visit the health department’s website. The patient is an adult and recently traveled abroad. Now no longer communicable, the patient has been recently released from the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. Officials from the health department are in the process of reaching out to people who were in direct contact with the patient. Others who may have been indirectly exposed are probably not at risk. People who have received at least one dose of the measles vaccine are highly unlikely to catch the illness. However, the department will offer preventative treatment to people who have not been vaccinated that could be at high risk, like pregnant women and infants.
