Rubio wants to strip gun-control authority from elected officials

A potential Republican presidential candidate has introduced a new bill that would prohibit local elected officials in D.C. from enacting gun-control laws. The bill, introduced Thursday by Senator Marco Rubio of Florida would essentially leave D.C. administered only by federal gun laws. Rubio stated that District leaders have infringed on residents’ second-amendment rights and left them susceptible to criminals. The city necessitates that handguns be registered, and residents must have a valid purpose for obtaining a concealed-carry permit. The bill was co-introduced by Representative Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican. The only publicly announced GOP presidential candidate, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, introduced resolutions last week rejecting two District laws. Those laws would prevent private groups from discriminating against others for religious reasons.
