Hoping to avoid as much damage as possible, DC announced closure after closure for Monday. The Metro transit system, MARC train, WMATA bus lines, as well as regional bus systems in VA and MD closed after midnight, and residents are encouraged to limit travel to essential trips. The Smithsonian closed all of its museums in DC and NYC and most government offices were closed to non-essential employees and the public. Schools throughout the area are closed as well. Early-voting centers will also be closed on Monday as the area prepares for the onslaught of rain and wind from Hurricane Sandy.
Yesterday, Major Vincent Gray asked for a declaration of emergency from the White House and last night it was granted by President Obama.
