Spike Mendelsohn nominated as head of D.C. Food Policy Council

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the appointment of D.C. chef and restaurateur Spike Mendelsohn as the first chairman of the District’s new Food Policy Council. According to the mayor’s office, Mendelsohn will lead efforts to advocate the food economy and entrepreneurship, improve food access and equity, and promote urban agriculture and production. Mendelsohn stated that his primary goal is to increase food education and access to superior-quality food. D.C.’s Food Policy Council will report annually on the condition of the local food economy, regulatory and policy barriers and funding priorities. The council includes thirteen members from both nonprofit and for-profit businesses, and ten government agency non-voting members.
