Three D.C. schools were closed Thursday after the discovery of a “tar-like” substance in the water in the Logan Circle and Shaw areas. Cleveland, Garrison and Seaton elementary schools are closed, as is the Garnet-Patterson campus of Duke Ellington High School. The water quality issue was noticed after reports of a petroleum smell. Offices are flushing the water system in the area, and have warned it is not safe to drink. There is no word yet on when those schools will reopen or the drinking ban will be lifted. The contaminant may have entered the system when water pressure in the pipes dropped, a situation which could have been caused by an event like Tuesday’s large water main break.
