Dr. Jerry Umanos was one of the three Americans killed in a shooting at a Kabul Hospital in Afghanistan. An Afghan police guard opened fire on Umanos and others, including a father and son, killing three people, and injuring another as they walked through the hospital gates. Following the violent and currently unexplained act, the police guard shot himself but survived, according to police spokesman Hashmatullah Stanekza. This most recent attack on foreigners in Afghanistan comes only 20 days after the shooting and killing of two Associated Press journalists in the Khost province.

The hospital in Kabul is owned and operated by CURE, a non-profit organization that provides medical treatment to children who could normally not afford medical attention. CURE was founded to “heal the disabled children living in the world’s poorest countries.” Dr. Umanos, a pediatrician from Chicago, had been living in Afghanistan since 2007, working at the CURE Hospital as well as a community health center. Umanos not only treated patients, but also trained medical staff: The programs for which Umanos worked are the only two programs designed to train doctors in Afghanistan.

U.S. National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden stated “Any such attack on civilians at a hospital is despicable and cowardly.”
