An Air Algerie flight that took off Algiers and expected to land in Burkina Faso with 116 people aboard, crashed Thursday in northeastern Mali. The airline stated that the plane went down 40 miles from the Malian city of Gao, but provided no addition information. Fifty French citizens and one American are said to have been on board. Reportedly, the pilot contacted air traffic control in Niamey, Niger, to change course because of a storm. The flight endured thunderstorms with frequent lightning while flying but, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Anthony Sagliani, the thunderstorms were not violent.
