IS has allegedly performed a chemical attack on Iraqi police officers in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Officers suffering from the symptoms of a chlorine attack are being treated in a government hospital north of Baghdad. The Islamic State is known to have seized territory including a large former Iraqi chemical weapons plant, although experts feel the weapons store there two decades ago are unlikely to be in working order. Chlorine is available legally. This may be just the most recent chemical attack, as northern Syria reportedly has been targeted by IS with “systematic” attacks.
