Designer Oscar de la Renta has died at the age of 82, announced his family Monday. The Dominican-born fashion designer grew up the only son in a large family before moving to Spain to study art and clothing. De la Renta studied under Christobal Balenciaga in Spain, and then landed a job at Lanvin within a day of moving to Paris. By 1965, the self-named Oscar de la Renta brand was launched, including a revolutionary ready-to-wear collection. De la Renta designs have been worn by actresses and every first lady since Jacqueline Kennedy, as well as many notable public male figures including President Obama. The company announced last week the appointment of Peter Copping as the new creative director. The details of de la Renta’s death have not been released. He leaves behind a wife and a son.
