Hong Kong, 12 hours ahead of New York, saw Thursday the end of both the two-day public holiday, China’s National Day, and the fifth day of the protests occupying the center of the city. Demonstrators, mostly students, have gathered outside the government office, calling for the resignation of Chief Executive CY Leung by midnight, about an hour from now. They say they will occupy the building if he does not comply. Police are reported to be stockpiling riot gear in the area, as the Chinese government has stated they will use “appropriate force” if the protesters attempt to move into the building or stop government workers from returning to work Friday. Protesters are angry about China’s plan to choose the candidates for 2017’s full election, which was promised to be one of universal suffrage. They want more democracy than party-chosen candidates.

UPDATE 12:35 ET

Chief Executive CY Leung has refused to step down. Leung warned protesters surrounding the government buildings that they are breaking the law, and has offered to begin talks with protesters. These announcements came from a press conference held just before midnight local time, the protesters deadline.
