World News – 6.2 magnitude earthquake hits central Italy

Sixty-three people have died in a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck central Italy early Wednesday. Rescuers are continuing their search for survivors, but are struggling to reach some remote towns. Amatrice, a small mountain town, was at the epicenter of the quake. “The town is no more,” Amatrice Mayor Sergio Pirozzi said. CNN’s Frederik Pleitgen reports that “The authorities here believe many many people may have died in this quake and that the death toll may rise because of the magnitude of this, and because many old historic buildings have crumbled.” Pleitgen said crews need heavy high powered jacks to lift things and big metal saws to get through concrete and metal. “They always say the first 72 hours are key — for those who are trapped, that’s (typically) how long they can survive,” he said.
