Colorado shooter receives life sentence without parole

On Wednesday, Judge Carlos A. Samour gave the Colorado shooter James Holmes a sentence of 12 consecutive life terms without parole plus 3,318 years. After giving the verdict, he had Holmes removed from the courtroom as people cheered and insulted the convicted gunman. The lengthy trial came to an end three years and 37 days after the shooting, in which Holmes murdered 12 people during a midnight showing of “The Dark Night Rises” in a Denver suburb. Samour was required to give Holmes a life sentence without parole instead of the death penalty after a split jury decided the matter. 11 of the 12 jurors voted for the death penalty, but under Colorado law the death penalty cannot be given without a unanimous jury. Holmes has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and tried to plead not guilty by reason of insanity, but Samour decided that he knew that his actions were wrong.
