D.C. mayor says city is safe, in spite of recent rise in homicide

In spite of the recent rise in homicide in Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser has stated that the city is safe. In her words, “This city is among the safest cities anywhere in the United States.” As of Tuesday, there have been 95 homicides in D.C. this year. Bowser also said that “while we’re experiencing a spike in crime, overall our crime statistics are flat.” According to police data, there has been a 30% increase in homicide compared to the same eight-month period last year, whereas overall crime has only increased by 4%.
