District of Columbia schools will not hold the annual ‘Beautification Day’ this year, where volunteers would clean up schools before the school year. Instead, there will be an ‘Adopt-a-School’ program that will encourage more long-term volunteer work. Officials said that while the ‘Beautification Day’ is a nice gesture, it happens during a busy time of year and becomes a logistical challenge. Some schools will host the event on their own. The school year begins August 24.
