State Violates Detention Rules for Rioters
Maryland – A Baltimore city judge says the state was in violation of normal court protocols after holding suspected rioters more than the allotted 24 hours before having bail set. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan made an executive order to extend the deadline to 47 hours, however, the Baltimore judge did not comment on the legality of the order. The two defendants that were refused release are still in custody.
Governor Vetoes Bills Limiting Police Surveillance
Virginia – Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe vetoed a bill limiting police’s storage capacity. He said he was not limiting the automatic license plate reader because it could “jeopardize public safety.” However, earlier in the year the General Assembly passed measures to actually rein in citizen surveillance.
U.S. Capitol Terrorism Plot
D.C. – In January 21-year-old Christopher Lee Cornell was arrested for plotting to attack the U.S. Capitol building. The FBI said Cornell planned to “wage jihad” by pipe bombing and shooting government officials. He subsequently was charged with attempted murder of U.S. officials and employees along with two other counts, but after pleading not guilty Cornell’s attorney requested to privately view the evidence against him.
