Last inmates removed from run-down Baltimore jail

At the behest of Maryland governor Larry Hogan, the decrepit Baltimore City Detention Center has been completely shut down and the last inmates have been removed. The jail was the subject of reform attempts for decades due to its hazardous conditions, including blind corners, dark corridors, 19th century walls, moldy showers, mouse and cockroach infestations, and poor medical care. Hogan said that it had also been plagued by corruption and criminal activity for years. In 2013, a large drug-and-cellphone smuggling ring in the prison was exposed, leading to the conviction of 24 correctional officers. The closure will save the state between $10 million and 15$ million annually, according to Hogan. Maryland lawmakers say they have yet to be informed about the new locations of the inmates, numbering about 1,100.
