After a Supreme Court decision, which will cost Montgomery County millions, the Montgomery County Council has made budget cuts amounting to $54 million. The Council’s unanimous decision differed from County Executive Ike Leggett’s suggestions in some ways, such as their decision to defer infrastructure spending, instead of lowering the salaries of caretakers for the developmentally disabled. The council still has some budget cutting to do in the future in order to fully refund the county’s residents in accordance with the the Supreme Court’s ruling, which found that some of the county’s taxing practices had been unconstitutional. In total, the county owes its residents around 200 million dollars.
