Elevated lead levels found in children living at homeless shelter

Two children currently living at D.C.’s largest homeless shelter have tested positive for elevated levels of lead. According to NBC Washington, it is still unknown whether the children were exposed at D.C. General, or if it happened elsewhere. However, one of the cafeterias inside the shelter tested positive for lead and was shut down immediately. The affected children, who are not related and live in separate rooms, are nine months old and two years old. Laura Green Zeilinger, director of the D.C. Department of Human Services, stated that there was a common area where there was some chipping paint in the cafeteria and the paint tested positive for lead. Residents were notified of the lead situation on Tuesday, and every child there may be tested for exposure.
