The annual National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count reported Saturday the sighting of a Snowy Owl near the National Airport. The bird, which used to be widely seen in the D.C. area, has been rare as of late. This recent sighting helps to confirm that the birds are returning to the area. The count is intended to gather information on population and migration patterns as the years progress. The Count began December 14, and will continue through January 5 across the country. The D.C. area’s count was Saturday, and hundreds of participants gathered across the area.
